It's always a dilemma as to what to make next. I have so many ideas, my brain might explode! I'm constantly thinking of what comes next...
I always sketch a new design by hand, not a fan of computer enhanced graphics. Pencil and paper are always readily at hand and my first port of call.
I perfected dressmaking whilst at school so I'm no stranger to using patterns. I take all my patterns from my original sketch and then piece them back together; bit like a jigsaw.
Depending on what the project involves, this will determine which fabric and thread I use. For example, if I'm making a shopping bag, the fabric needs to be hard wearing and durable.
Some of the pieces are really small and have to be cut out very accurately; another skill acquired from my dressmaking days. I use recycled fabrics from other garments such as dresses and linings.
A lot of my projects are machine appliqued which means I machine stitch around the outside of the indivudal fabric pieces to add them to the background fabric.
To add more detail such as facial features or flowers and leaves, I hand embroider them; something I particuarly enjoy doing using stranded cotton or 4ply yarn.
All the individual parts of the project get sewn together to make the finished article, whether its a bag, cushion, furnishing or a toy.
I sell my finished products through 2 local shops in Derbyshire as well as through my Etsy page.
